Friday Fail

6 07 2012

I’m borrowing this theme from The Rookie Dad. I read this in the news this morning and have repeatedly had my palm meet my forehead and can’t wrap my head around this parent.

She deserves a Friday Fail. It scares me to read stories like this because parents are so irresponsible.

So the long and the short of it is this mother received a cell phone bill for $2000. She investigated and discovered her 15 year old son called a sex phone line using her phone.

She’s now turned to the media because there is no “accountability” for her son’s actions.

She feels the phone company is accountable because they didn’t notify her that the bill was being run up.

She feels the company running the phone sex line is accountable because they provided services to her son. (He lied about being 18)

She feels that the police should be accountable and be charging the above stated people because her son is a
minor.

She stated she yelled at her son however in the article she is not holding herself or her son accountable.

On a cell phone you can set up notifications for usage. You can also set passwords on the device as well as passwords for outgoing long distance or collect calls. It’s easy to do and the companies are quite happy to assist with this.

In my eyes the mother dropped the ball here. It’s her responsibly for her 15 year old son. Where was she when these calls were being made? Has she ever discussed the birds and the bees with her son? In the article it says that she’s a software architect. In my experience people who work in software tend to be pretty smart about technology since they are usually writing it and involved in it.

I understand teens are curious and before I wrote this blog I tried to fast forward a few years and what would I have done if my child did something like this.

Well once I investigated and made this discovery my child would be cut off. I would not call the police. I would pay the bill and then make my child get a job, do odd jobs or whatever it took until that $2000 tab was paid off. The wrath of Mom and Dad would be unleashed and my child would learn quite a lesson from this. He would be grounded and he would hate me but parents need to realize that WE are the one who are accountable.

I wasn’t allowed a cell phone until I
could pay for one myself. I had pay as
you go cell phones for years.

The ability to control what your minor sees and does with a cell phone, computer or TV is available.

Yes I realize there are ways that these things can be circumvented and you can’t lock or child up forever.

I wonder when this child gets his license and is in his first accident who’s fault it will be?

For blaming everyone except her son and herself, this Mom gets the Friday Fail.
